From late 2026, Australians visiting most European countries will need to apply for ETIAS before departure. If you’ve travelled to the USA and applied for an ESTA, the process will feel very similar. Here’s what Australians should know about ETIAS, when it starts, what it costs, and which countries it covers.
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is a digital travel authorisation for travellers from visa-waiver countries, including Australia.
It is not a visa. Instead, ETIAS allows European authorities to pre-screen travellers for security reasons before they enter the Schengen Area.
When Does ETIAS Start?
ETIAS is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026. It follows the roll-out of the EU’s new Entry/Exit System, which begins in October 2025.
You cannot apply yet. Applications will only open once the system goes live.
How Much Does ETIAS Cost?
- The fee will be €20 (around AUD$33).
- Payment will be made online by card.
- Travellers under 18 and over 70 will not pay the fee.
- Only use the official EU ETIAS website once it launches. Third-party sites may try to charge more.
How Long is ETIAS Valid?
- Valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
- It covers multiple entries.
- Each stay is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period.
What Countries Require ETIAS?
ETIAS will apply to 30 European countries, including all Schengen members and a few others.
Some of the most popular destinations for Australians include:
France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Malta.
It also includes non-Schengen EU members Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. Ireland is not included.
How is ETIAS Similar to ESTA?
If you’ve been to the United States, you’ll recognise the process.
- Both ETIAS and ESTA are online authorisations, not visas.
- Both require a small fee and are linked to your passport.
- Both must be approved before boarding your flight.
- Both are valid for multiple trips across several years.
The main difference is simply the destination: ESTA is for the USA, ETIAS is for Europe.
How to Apply
- Apply only on the official ETIAS website: travel-europe.europa.eu/etias
- Have your passport and payment card ready.
- Approvals should be quick, but some cases may take up to 96 hours.
- If you renew your passport, you’ll need a new ETIAS.
Tips for Australians
- Check your passport has at least six months’ validity beyond your travel dates.
- Plan your travel days carefully to comply with the 90/180 day rule.
- Apply early once the system launches—don’t leave it to the last minute.
- Avoid websites pretending to offer ETIAS now; it is not yet available.
Key Dates
- Entry/Exit System (EES): Starts 12 October 2025.
- ETIAS: Expected to begin in the last quarter of 2026.
